What do Renee Zellweger’s plastic surgery, Kim Kardashian’s Derrière, and Brangelina’s wedding have in common?
Despite any of the other things that may have come to your mind, the thing that these things do, in fact, have in common, are that they are some of the most widely discussed and disputed things on the internet, social media, and in our society’s news.
I recently read the article by Eileen Shim, “If You Laughed at Renee Zellweger’s Plastic Surgery You Need to see these Photos.”
In my opinion, the article made a simple, yet very profound point. People are more likely to click on an article about whether or not Renee Zellweger had Botox, than they are to click on an article, say, about a war that is severely affecting thousands of people, grand scientific advancements, or heroic doctors and nurses who are selflessly trying to help those affected by a fatal disease.
Ironically enough, the society that is hyper-obsessed with Angelina’s wedding dress or the new size of Kim Kardashian’s derrière, is the same society that most people try so desperately hard to fit into. We make ourselves look, talk, and act in a way that fits into it’s “norms”.
And what if you don’t? What if you decide to deviate from these norms, and create your own path?
What if at 23 you don’t decide to jump into a 9-5 job with a full-time salary and 401-k plan? What if at 23 you decide to work and live off of not alot of euros a month, chase life experiences, learn new languages, and educate yourself about the world through first-hand encounters, instead?
Some people talk!
You might be thought of as weird. Or crazy. Or be called a dreamer. Or unrealistic. Or running away from ‘real life.’
Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture, like I do?
While I am not trying to bash what articles you do and don’t decide to read in your free time, afterall, Anglina’s dress was pretty snazzy…. I am trying to bring up a point about how you decide to live your own life.
If you are currently at a place in your life where you feel trapped by what you “should” do with your life, I want to encourage you to re-think who you are getting your “shoulds” or “shouldn’ts” from.
Is it from the same society that is talking about Renee Zellweger’s plastic surgery, Kim Kardashian’s derrière, or Brangelina’s wedding?
As human beings, we have the unique ability to think and reason for ourselves. We have one life to live. Why not follow your dreams?!
As Steve Jobs would say, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma-which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
Moi, my heart is leading me to Prague for the weekend to discover some of my own cultural background!!
